Following a request from a number of parents to provide additional Topper class coaching in the region over the winter we are pleased to announce some additional dates in our winter coaching programme specifically for Topper sailors.

The focus of the sessions will vary pending on the sailors who sign up but the intention is for the content (for the performance group in particular) to build on previous sessions. You are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible.

The Topper sessions will be graded so that the coaching can be tailored to a specific experience level.

Groups will be decided before sailors arrive as it is the intention to offer Performance Coaching using a Lead Coach and also Open Coaching with other coaches under the guidance and mentorship of the Lead Coach as appropriate. Content of all groups during the day will be broadly similar but will be coached at a level appropriate for the sailors in each group.
NEYYSA and the Lead Coach reserve the right to amend sailor group allocation if we believe a different group will suit the sailor better or we need to amend groups for safety, coaching objectives or any other operational reason.

To help you decide which group to sign up for, please consider the following;
Performance Coaching You must have participated in at least two national events in the last season and be regularly participating in regional competitions within the main fleet. Your Topper needs to be race-rigged (6:1 kicker & 6:1 downhaul etc) and in full working order. You must have full winter sailing kit and be prepared to spend the full day on the water (afloat for lunch).

Open Coaching Your Topper needs to be in full working order but not necessarily fully race-rigged. You must have full winter sailing kit and with support from the coaching team be able & prepared to spend the full day on the water (afloat for lunch) when conditions permit. You need to have RYA Stage 3 or equivalent skills and you must be able to sail a triangle course, including upwind, unassisted. As a minimum, you are either racing regularly at club or regional regatta level or intend to start doing so in 2026.

If you are not yet at the standard to join the Topper specific sessions, there are lots of novice race coaching sessions planned which you can Book Novice Race Coaching here

You must wear a full wetsuit or drysuit. A helmet will be provided and must be worn when sailing the boat.
It will be a small group and you will swap in & out of the boat. Consequently you are likely to spend some time on the RIB while others sail, please make sure you bring suitable additional kit to wear on the RIB to keep warm.

Sailors signing up should aged be 14 years or older and be racing at national event standard, have several years displacement dinghy experience and be able to demonstrate good displacement dinghy sailing skills and control. NEYYSA & Waszp UK reserve the right to decline a sailor's participation if they believe they do not have suitable core competency to safely sail and control the boat.

Interested? Sign up for a Waszp Trial Sail. We will get back to you with date & venue options as we are working with the weather and slotting these sessions in when opportunity presents itself.

The class associations are also organising regional winter coaching. Most classes operate a whats'app or telegram community, if you need help finding out how to join these please ask us and we'll point you in the right direction. NEYYSA does not publicise any whats'app or telegram community links on the website for safeguarding and privacy reasons.

Some practical points about winter coaching!
-
You need to have suitable kit for winter sailing.
-
Some clubs offer their water & clubhouse but don't have an operating galley during the winter, we will let you know but you may need to bring all your own food.
-
Winter sailing burns a lot of calories, make sure your sailor has plenty of food on board and a drink.
-
Sometimes the weather thwarts us and we need to cancel / re-arrange at the last minute. We will do our best to provide an alternative plan with as much notice as possible.
