2026 Youth Traveller Series

Entry is now open for the 2026 traveller series, get your diaries out and get entering!

The series is inclusive, supportive and welcoming but is also very competitive.  There is racing for all level of sailors aged U19 on 1 September 2026.

The Main Fleet is for sailors who are regularly racing at club, regional or (inter)national level in any displacement, mono-hulled boat.

The Regatta Fleet is for sailors who are just starting their racing journey and may need some support on the water to help complete the race.  The association supports this fleet with a regular coach at most events to give continuity and a familiar face, this coach is bolstered by the host clubs providing additional assistance as needed.  Minimum competency for this fleet is RYA Stage 2 or equivalent with an ability to sail upwind.

The Rookie Fleet allows young sailors or sailors who are not yet competent enough for the regatta fleet, to participate with the support of a competent adult.  This fleet is for double handers only and the adult must be regularly racing at club or regional level as a minimum.  We encourage the Rookie sailor to helm pending conditions.  NEYYSA & the host club reserves the right to decline an entry in this fleet if we deem the adult to not have sufficient experience.  Rookie sailors are not eligible for the overall event prizes or series prizes.

Traveller Series Objectives

The objective is to promote;

  • competitive racing events,

  • friendship,

  • high quality sailing skills

  • personal growth.

The series offers opportunity to young sailors in the region in all classes to sail against their peers on a handicap basis.  The series also visits several clubs which do not necessarily host RYA Youth & Junior class events due to their location, specific geography or water size.  Experiencing a variety of sailing venues is a key element in developing high quality sailing skills that will last a lifetime.

The series is a supportive, inclusive opportunity for all to race, those at the front are often competing in their chosen class at national level, those at the back may be venturing onto the race course for the first time.  All are welcome and the series view is that the peer support offered by this series out on the water and on-shore is invaluable and represents and celebrates the essence of our sport.

The association's events offer opportunity for new experiences, competitive racing and friendships without the additional concerns of overnight accommodation (for the majority of our events) as the venues are within a few hours travelling time of home allowing families to be home in time for tea.  Sunday can then be spent at the home club or enjoying family time together.
